Florian Plettenburg says Tottenham have beaten Man Utd to transfer as player makes decision
Tottenham have won the race to sign one of their prime targets on deadline day.
Tottenham have won the race to sign an attacker they have been in pursuit of over recent days. Spurs came into deadline day hoping to land a new forward having been hit by a fresh wave of injuries, with Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson all sidelined.
The return of Richarlison will certainly help, but Ange Postecoglou needs more depth up top if he is to guide Tottenham back towards the top half of the table.
Over recent days, it has become clear that Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel is the main target, with the winger, who can also play centrally, searching for a way out of the Allianz Arena to get more regular game time. Manchester United were heavily linked, while Arsenal also joined the race.
But it seems Spurs have won the race, with Florian Plettenburg reporting: “EXCLUSIVE | Mathys #Tel on his way to TOTTENHAM!!! He wants to join @SpursOfficial now!!!”
On the back of that, Fabrizio Romano added: “BREAKING: Mathys Tel to Tottenham on loan, here we go! :bomba: Straight loan and NO buy option clause. Agreement reached between clubs as Bayern have accepted player’s decision and player on his way with agent Gadiri Camara/ Deal in place, as @Plettigoal reported.”
Bayern were said to be asking for £60million to sell Tel, but Spurs were never going to pay that this month, so a loan deal will suit them. The 19-year-old has made 14 appearances for Bayern at senior level this season, providing one assist, while he is yet to score.
Tel will want, and indeed need, regular game time, and Tottenham will be hoping he can improve on his current form with more minutes in North London. The youngster is under contract at Bayern until 2029, so if Spurs want to keep him beyond this season, it’s likely they will be met with the same sort of asking price that is currently on the table.
