Millwall have confirmed the signing of Japhet Tanganga as a free agent.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga has completed a move to Championship club Millwall as a free agent having been released by the Premier League side at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan with the Lions and quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his performances. Tanganga made 18 league appearances in a relegation dogfight, finding himself on the scoresheet with crucial goals against Southampton and Birmingham City.

It had been expected that Tanganga would re-join Millwall this summer but the transfer had hit delays. Before the player's premature release, it was reported that Neil Harris' side would bid for the player and, having become a free agent, it was then said that the defender would look at all options before committing to life at The Den.

On Wednesday, Millwall confirmed that the deal had finally been completed with the defender signing a 'long-term contract' with the club. Harris said: "He was the number one target over the summer. He has fitted perfectly in the dressing room, the fans have taken to him immediately with his performances and the way he plays the game with a big heart. He's just a very, very good player."

Tanganga was known to have booked a medical with Millwall on Monday. Newly promoted side Ipswich Town had also been linked with the player, as had recently relegated Luton Town.

Speaking about his future earlier this year, Tanganga had said: “My focus is to build on from my spell at Millwall, with the number of games I played. You want to be in a position where you’re playing week in, week out, so whether that’s at Spurs or somewhere else, that is something that needs to be discussed in the future and we’ll see where we go from there.”
