'Maybe' - Ex-Arsenal star names one thing that must happen for Harry Kane to agree stunning £64m Spurs return

Harry Kane left Tottenham to join Bayern Munich in August 2023 for a fee of £79 million.

Tottenham Hotspur will be wishing that former striker Harry Kane was still in the squad, as they have injuries to both Timo Werner and Dominic Solanke at the moment.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled with injury problems this season, and come off the back of a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

Tottenham now look ahead to an FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, in order to keep their hopes of winning a domestic trophy alive this season. However, recent news has sparked the attention of Tottenham as it has been revealed that Harry Kane will have a £54m release clause in his contract next year, meaning that clubs could sign the striker on a cut-price deal.

Paul Merson says one thing will ‘have to’ happen before a potential Kane return

Many at Spurs will be keen to see Kane make a return to North London as he can still catch up to Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record. Kane made over 430 appearances for Tottenham during his time with the club, scoring 280 goals for the club. He hasn’t stopped scoring since moving to Bayern either, netting 70 goals in 72 games for the Bundesliga side.

Rumours have sparked over a possible return to Spurs for Kane amid his release clause announcement, however ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has said that one thing has to happen before there is any chance of Kane returning. He said on Sky Sports News: “Maybe Tottenham will buy him back but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.”

Tottenham currently have Kane’s former teammate in Mathys Tel, who signed for the club on loan in the January transfer window. Tel made the move in order to get more regular game time, as Vincent Kompany has preferred to play Kane at Bayern.

Spurs could sign Tel on a permanent deal at the end of the season, should they pay the £50m option to buy. However, if there is a possibility of Kane returning to Tottenham, then they would likely pass on Tel.

Merson predicts Kane to move to Tottenham rivals

In a shocking prediction, Merson said that he thinks that Arsenal will sign Harry Kane, despite the fact that they are bitter rivals with Spurs. He said: “Arsenal will buy him, why not? £64m, why not? Sol Campbell did [make the move]. People will go ‘oh he’s this age and that age’ but Arsenal need now. If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven.”

Arsenal had been linked to Ollie Watkins during the January transfer window, but they saw a bid rejected by Aston Villa in order to land the England international. They decided not to send an improved offer.

The Gunners have also been heavily linked to Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, and are expected to make a move for the 21-year-old during the summer transfer window. However, if Mikel Arteta can sign Kane, one of the best Premier League strikers of all time, the Arsenal boss would likely jump at the chance to help solve their issues at the position.
