Ange Postecoglou handed Tottenham sack boost as 'target' snapped up by another club

Tottenham have missed out on a reported managerial target, handing Ange Postecoglou a boost.

Tottenham have missed out on a reported managerial target as they consider what to do with Ange Postecoglou. Daniel Levy is still mulling over his options after a dramatic end to what was looking like a disastrous season.

Spurs posted their wirst-ever Premier League points total, but Postecoglou ended the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy, winning the Europa League and qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Postecoglou said he would win something in his second year and he lived up to his promise, but that might not be enough for him to keep his job.

Levy must decide whether he has seen enough from Postecoglou to allow him to continue next season, and it seems like his preference is to move on. Reports aplenty have claimed Tottenham have been shopping around for a new boss, with plenty of managers linked, but Postecoglou has not yet been sacked, and much may come down to whether a replacement can be found.

Postecoglou is currently in Australia with his family enjoying some time off, likely nervously awaiting the ring of his phone as he patiently waits to see what his future holds.

One manager Tottenham were linked with in recent days is Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, with claims that Levy had held talks with the Italian over making the switch to North London. Inzaghi led Inter to the Champions League final this season, but his side again fell short, as they did when they faced Manchester City in the last final they reached.

On the back of that, Inzaghi walked away from his role on Wednesday night and almost immediately penned a deal to become manager of Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal. He signed a deal up to 2027, and Tottenham will have to look elsewhere.

Inter Milan statement

Inter wrote in a statement: “The Club and Simone Inzaghi part ways. This is the decision made in the meeting held a few minutes ago. Inzaghi’s spell at Inter will be remembered by the fans, players, directors and Club employees as one of great passion, professionalism and dedication.

“Six major honours: one Scudetto, two Coppa Italia titles, and three Italian Supercups are the trophy haul of the past four years, which have seen the Club return to the pinnacle of Italian and European football. Inzaghi is one of the head coaches with the most appearances in the dugout for the Nerazzurri, alongside some other illustrious names: Herrera, Mancini, Trapattoni and Mourinho. Just like the rest of this exclusive group, Inzaghi made a significant contribution in adding to Inter’s trophy cabinet and will forever be remembered as the coach who took us to our Second Star.

“’On behalf of our main shareholder, Oaktree, and the entire Club, I want to thank Simone Inzaghi for his hard work, passion, and also sincerity in today’s meeting, which has yielded the mutual decision to part ways. Only when you have fought together every day to achieve success can you have an open and honest dialogue, such as we have had today” said Inter Chairman Giuseppe Marotta after the meeting.’”
