QPR 'want' Sheffield United transfer as Blackburn Rovers hope ex Premier League star returns tonight

Julien Stephan takes his QPR side to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night in a six-pointer.

QPR defender Rhys Norrington-Davies is proving to be a loan success as he continues to impress on his temporary spell at Loftus Road having been deemed surplus to requirements at Sheffield United.

The R’s were in desperate need of a left back this summer with Kenneth Paal having left the club and Harrison Ashby returned from his loan to Newcastle United. Ziyad Larkeche also suffered an ACL injury to create a small nightmare in that position.

Norrington-Davies was drafted in from Sheffield United and has racked up 783 minutes in the Championship for QPR since. SportsBoom now reports that QPR ‘want’ to make the player’s loan spell a permanent deal next summer with a transfer bid expected.

It’s added that QPR are ‘confident’ that a deal can be struck. Stephan was asked about the player’s future following the 0-0 draw with Sheffield United earlier this month, which Norrington-Davies missed due to loan rules, and said: “He’s a very dynamic player. He has started very well with us. He did some very good performances and then he had a little injury. We played Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford in four days and he was probably the best player on the pitch in the two games.

“But then he had a little injury in the calves, stopped for two weeks and the restart was more difficult. But his last game against Southampton on Wednesday was very good and we found again the same Rhys from before the injury.

“We are happy with his performance because he's able to win a one-v-one defensively and he's able to run offensively as well, to support our offensive players. He has good quality as well in crosses. He’s a good player.

“I think for us, it's very important to have some reliable players. And he's a reliable player, both offensively and defensively. And he has a very big strength in terms of ability to repeat the run.”

Blackburn Rovers not set for expected injury boost

Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers host QPR at Ewood Park on Wednesday night and head coach Valerian Ismael will not get a significant injury boost that had been touted. Rovers club captain Todd Cantwell has been missing for the last seven league matches but it was thought that he could return tonight.

The 27-year-old, who has 45 Premier League appearances and six top flight goals to his name thanks to his time at Norwich City, is said to have ‘made improvements’ from his injury. Some reports suggested a potential return to the squad on Wednesday night but the Lancashire Telegraph has since reported that Cantwell will not play a part this evening.

Ismael will also be without Sondre Tronstad, who is sidelined for a couple of weeks with an ankle injury, despite playing 90 minutes against Preston North End last week. Ismael said: "Unfortunately, we lost Sonny in the game against Preston after an amazing performance. He has a problem with his ankle which will take a couple of weeks. It’s not a bad injury but a couple of weeks in the Championship means four games. We have to deal with that situation."
