QPR edge closer to £13.5m windfall amid Tottenham and Arsenal transfer race twist
Tottenham Hotspur are the latest side to be linked with Crystal Palace man Eberechi Eze, with a potential sale benefitting QPR.
QPR are looking increasingly likely to pocket a £13.5 million transfer windfall this summer as Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze continues to be linked with an exit from Selhurst Park.
The England international was the subject of transfer rumours last summer but nothing came of those reports. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted: "I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have. I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person."
However, a summer exit looks to be on the cards come the end of the campaign. TBR Football have this week reported a fresh twist in the transfer race with Tottenham Hotspur emerging as frontrunners ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur working on Eberechi Eze transfer
Ange Postecoglou has endured an underwhelming season in North London and is set to make decisive moves over the next transfer window. TBR reports that Spurs are ‘front of the queue’ for the player and that Eze is a ‘top target’ for the club.
Eze joined Tottenham Hotspur from QPR in 2020, having made his first team breakthrough in West London. The winger had previously spent time in the youth academies at Arsenal, Fulham, Reading and Millwall.
The forward racked up 112 appearances for the R’s before being sold to Crystal Palace, who have developed a reputation for spotting EFL talent. Michael Olise, Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi have all made similar steps up with the club, alongside January signing Romain Esse.
QPR hold 20% Eze sell-on clause
Crystal Palace paid a reported £16 million to sign Eze, which could rise to £20 million depending on add-ons. At the time, Sky Sports reported that QPR were clever enough to insert a 20% sell-on clause in that agreement.
That could prove lucrative this summer, should Eze be sold to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal or another suitor. The Daily Mail has claimed that the £68 million release clause in the player’s contract, which had closed, will be open again come the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Should a £68 million move be agreed, that could see around £13.5 million of windfall on its way to Loftus Road. The R’s could then look to use that money to fund any summer spending under Marti Cifuentes.
When selling the player to the Eagles in 2020, QPR CEO Lee Hoos said: “Ebere has been fantastic to deal with throughout this entire process and I speak for everyone at the club when I wish him every success going forward.
“This transfer comes at a very important time for the club as we face so much uncertainty amid unprecedented economic times. While dealing with their own business challenges, the shareholders have continued to financially support the club in order to safeguard its status.
“While we recognise there is a need to invest in the squad, we will continue our ethos of looking to bring in young, hungry, unpolished gems who can develop with us."
In other news, QPR are battling Swansea City for the signing of a nine-goal striker with a £2.2 million fee touted.
