QPR handed 'big' injury blow ahead of Bristol City and Millwall clashes

The QPR defender had been edging close to a long-awaited comeback before yet another setback.

QPR head coach Julien Stephan had hoped that centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter could play a ‘big’ part in his work at Loftus Road but the defender has suffered yet another injury setback this week.

The 28-year-old has been a key part of the R’s team since arriving at Loftus Road from Chelsea in 2022. Clarke-Salter only managed 11 Championship appearances last term in a campaign impacted by injury.

The defender last played a match for QPR in the 6-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Leicester City in January and has been sidelined with a hip injury since. Clarke-Salter underwent successful surgery in January and had finally been getting close to a first team return this week.

QPR defender handed injury setback

QPR supporters were delighted to see the centre-back named as part of the Development Squad team to take on Swansea City on Tuesday evening. That news hinted at a potential imminent return to Championship action - likely not against Oxford United on Wednesday, but perhaps being eased back into action against Bristol City at the weekend or Millwall later this month.

However, hopes of an imminent return were handed a fresh setback with Clarke-Salter coming off after 11 minutes to be replaced by Timmy Akindileni in a disaster situation for the QPR star. It remains to be known how much of an aggravation the player caused.

QPR boss Stephan had high hopes for the defender at the beginning of the season. Clarke-Salter has 129 Championship appearances to his name and has also turned out for Vitesse, Birmingham City , Coventry City, Bristol Rovers and Sunderland.

Stephan had said: “With good management of his load, I think he is able to come back very strong – physically and mentally. He could be a big strength for us for the future because we know he’s a very good defender, left-footed – and we don’t have a left-footed centre-back, so it makes a big difference in terms of angles and passes. But we need to be patient as well with him. We want to give him the confidence that he needs.”

Julien Stephan on R’s defensive structure

QPR have been using Amadou Mbengue and Liam Morrison as the two centre-backs so far this season, with Rhys Norrington-Davies and Jimmy Dunne in the full-back positions.

Speaking about the importance of defence last month, Stephan told The Standard: “We want to be a team with a good defensive structure, a team it's difficult to create something against. For me, it's very important because without discipline and without structure, it's impossible. So, this is the first idea. The second idea is that players are able to fight for each other each time and represent well the values of the club.

“The third one is be a team able to create danger and share emotion with the fans. Like last week against Charlton, for me, it was perfect. When you win the last 10 minutes like this with all the fans, with the atmosphere, for me, it's perfect.

“The last idea is to be able to compete in terms of strategy, set-pieces, long-throwing. Because it's impossible to imagine in the Championship having good results without that.”
