Next QPR Manager: New candidate emerges with Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City also linked

The 42-year-old was placed on ‘gardening leave’ before the end of the Championship season after it had been reported that his representatives were in talks with West Brom following the sacking of Tony Mowbray. Cifuentes was also claimed to have had a breakdown in relationship with QPR CEO Christian Nourry.

Several candidates to replace Cifuentes have emerged in recent weeks. Former Lyon boss Pierre Sage and ex Watford man Tom Cleverley are current frontrunners, but it does remain to be officially confirmed that Cifuentes will not be returning to his post.

QPR, Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City linked with Stephen Robinson

Alan Nixon now claims on Patreon that QPR are considering Robinson as a candidate. League One side Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City - who were relegated from the Championship this season - are also named as admirers of the 50-year-old.

Robinson took over at St Mirren in 2022 and led the team to three top six finishes, claiming a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying round for the 2024/25 campaign. The coach has worked in the EFL previously with short stints at Oldham Athletic and Morecambe.

The manager signed a new contract with St Mirren in October 2024, committing his future to the club until 2027. Speaking when putting pen to paper on that deal, Robinson said: "I’m very happy here.

"We’ve had massive success over the last two and a half seasons. That’s something we’ve put a lot of work into and want to continue to build. In terms of the academy and the club as a whole, there’s a lot of good work that’s been done. I’ve got a brilliant working relationship with Jim Gillespie and Keith Lasley and we all want to push the club forward.

“I felt it was the right time to commit and hopefully keep moving in the right direction. We’ve had a few sticky results over the last few weeks where things haven’t gone our way, but we’ve got a lot of belief in the club, what we do and I’m happy to try and push the place forward.”

Kevin Betsy not interested in permanent job at Loftus Road

QPR were led by assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm for the final fixture of the Championship season, picking up a 1-0 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Betsy has since ruled out any chance of him taking on the managerial role full time.

Asked if he would want the position permanently, he told West London Sport: “No. I’m very clear; the club recruited me for a specific role.

“My role has been first-team coach, working 80% with individual players to improve – I’ve got a real expertise, I would say, in helping individuals develop – and hopefully I’ll be going back to that role. That’s very clear.”
