Neil Harris makes 'don't deserve' claim ahead of Middlesbrough vs Millwall and makes promise

Neil Harris has been speaking ahead of his farewell clash with Middlesbrough.

Millwall boss Neil Harris has promised he will attempt to go out with a bang in his final game in charge on Saturday. Harris has already confirmed that he will walk away from the role after the clash with Middlesbrough in a surprise move that has left fans stunned.

Harris has done fine work with the Lions in his latest spell, taking them away from the bottom three last season and establishing them as potential playoff contenders this term, although recent results have seen them drop a little, currently in 13th place and seven points off the top six.

Harris fell out with some fans after a recent outing, branding a section of the support ‘thickos’, and he announced his intention to leave just days later. It leaves the Lions in a tricky position with the festive fixtures just around the corner and no new manager found just yet.

But until Saturday is over and done with, the focus for Harris is going out with a bang and three points after a frustrating couple of games. “I don’t want to finish with three defeats, we don’t deserve that,” he said. “What we’ve achieved in the last 10 months. So I’ll pick a team accordingly at the weekend.

“We’ll be the ultra professional outfit that our dressing room is, we’ll rely on our culture and the ability that we’ve got and make sure we put in a positive performance at the weekend.”

Millwall’s search for a new manager is ongoing, with a number of bosses having been linked, including former Coventry City boss Mark Robins and current Walsall manager Mat Sadler.

What the club have said

Lions Chairman James Berylson said upon Harris’ departure confirmation: “At the start of 2024, we found ourselves in a tough spot. Neil came in and along with his coaching staff galvanised the squad. Through action and leadership, he led Millwall on a magnificent run of form, ensuring our return to Championship football this season.

“I want to thank Neil for all his efforts since returning to the Club and we will be forever grateful to him for that. After discussions with Neil in recent days, he felt it was the right time to step down from the role following the Middlesbrough game and I have accepted his decision."
