Some of the free agents Millwall and QPR can still sign after the closure of the winter transfer window.

Millwall and QPR can no longer sign players on paid fees or loan deals, with the winter transfer window shut until the summer. But there is an avenue both clubs can still explore if they want to add a touch more quality or a little more depth to see them through to the end of the season.

The clubs are still allowed to sign and register free agents, and with that in mind, we have put together a list of six free agents who last played for Premier League or Championship clubs who are still looking for new teams.

Mahlon Romero

Romero last played for Cardiff City, but he was released at the end of August having allegedly directed homophobic insults at a police officer following his arrest for drink driving. He later apologised, but it did not save his Cardiff career.

Before that, the full-back made 48 league appearances after making 198 for Millwall between 2015 and 2022. he is now 29 years of age.

Osman Kakay

Kakay was released by QPR last summer and he is yet to find a new club. He came through the Hoops academy before making 98 league appearances, so he is an experienced operator at 27 years of age.

Jeff Hendrick

The 33-year-old midfielder is still looking for a new club after his Newcastle United release last summer. He was never a big part of the Magpies’ plans, and he spent his last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, making 11 league appearances.

Jamie Paterson

Paterson was released by Charlotte FC, who decided not to renew his contract for the 2025 season despite having the option to do so. Coventry City have been linked with the 33-year-old, who has been training with the Sky Blues to keep fit. The former Swansea City man could be an attractive option, especially given he has been training with a Championship club.

Sean Morrison

Morrison is only going to be a back-up option at this stage of his career, now 34 years of age. He did make 29 league appearances for Rotherham United last season, and he is known to be a good leader and character in the dressing room. Morrison captained Cardiff City to promotion.

James Tomkins

Tomkins left Crystal Palace at the end of last season having enjoyed a good end to the season. The centre-back said upon leaving: “In the back of my mind I’m not finishing yet. I do feel like there’s a few years left in me, for sure. It’s just whereabouts. We obviously don’t know yet. I’m just going to stay positive, stay fit in the summer and enjoy it as well.” Tomkins may prefer a Premier League job, but he is now 35 years of age, and he has spent all of his career in London, which gives the two London clubs some sway.
