'Medical Booked': Millwall to sign 'assist-machine' who set up goals against Arsenal and Chelsea

Alex Neil continues to strengthen his Millwall squad ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Luton Town defender Alfie Doughty is set to undergo a medical at Millwall ahead of a transfer back to the Championship following the Hatters’ relegation to League One last season.

The 25-year-old made 26 second tier appearances last season for Luton Town, who suffered back-to-back relegations following their Premier League campaign over 2023/24. During that season, Doughty was a standout star for the club in the top flight.

The versatile defender, who can play in midfield as well as in defence, was somewhat of an assist machine in the Premier League. Doughty picked up eight assists and two goals in the Premier League, despite Luton Town winning just six matches.

Doughty grabbed a brace of assists in a 4-3 defeat to Arsenal and also set up a goal against Chelsea in a 3-2 loss, proving his capabilities against the Premier League big dogs. His goals came in a win over Sheffield United and on the final day of the season against Fulham.

Given his pedigree, Doughty had been expected to bounce back up to the Championship and it appears as if it will be Millwall who win that race. The Mirror reports that a medical has been booked in what will be a blow to Luton Town, who begin their League One campaign against AFC Wimbledon on Friday.

Millwall have already broken their transfer record to sign Josh Coburn on a permanent move from Middlesbrough earlier this summer and it remains to be seen how much is forked out for Doughty. The player signed a new long term contract at Kenilworth Road in September 2024, giving the League One side negotiating power.

Matt Bloomfield explains Alfie Doughty absence

A move does seem inevitable with Doughty pulled from Luton Town’s starting XI against Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday with short notice. Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield said: “Listen, Alfie has had interest all through the summer because he’s a player who played at a very good level. In the Premier League he had a very good season and last year he showed some real top moments, so he has had some interest, Alfie, and I’m sure that will go on for the rest of the window.

“It was the right decision I made before the game, post team sheets, was that he wouldn’t play, so that was the way the game went. I just said in the other room, there’s a lot going on in pre-season. It’s very rare, I think, that both teams change their left full-backs between team sheets and kick-off, which happened today, so it was the right decision for Alfie not to play but I’m sure he’ll be absolutely fine and we’ll welcome him back into the group as soon as we can, but he’ll be fine.”
