Millwall 'face fresh competition' for signing as Sunderland transfer target returns to club
All the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Millwall, QPR and the Championship clubs.
Millwall and QPR have both secured safe passage through to the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the Hoops defeating Cambridge United and the Lions seeing off Portsmouth with an away win. Attention now turns back to the Championship and the second matchday of the season this weekend.
Both sides got off to losing starts to their season and improvement will be expected this weekend as players find their feet again. In the meantime, we have rounded up all the latest news and transfer rumours from around the Championship.
Sunderland target returns
Reported Sunderland target Alexandre Mendy has returned to training with Caen amid talk of a possible move to England. According to Ouest France via SportWitness, Mendy was spotted in training and working hard after his return with uncertainty continuing to surround his future.
The report claim that Sunderland are ‘waiting’ to sign Ligue 2’s top scorer from last season but Caen are fighting to keep hold of their star forward, and a deal looks no closer to being struck at this point.
Winger competition
Millwall will reportedly face fresh competition in their bid to land Reading talent Femi Azeez. According to Darren Witcoop, Plymouth Argyle have now entered the race for the 23-year-old winger.
Millwall have been credited with an interest over the last couple of weeks, with Stoke City also said to be interested. Reading are already said to have rejected bids for Azeez, with the race now said to be between three clubs and possible even more.
Cifuentes issues transfer wish
QPR boss Marti Cifuentes says he is still hoping to add to his squad despite having already snapped up as many as 10 new players this summer. He told West London Sport: “I hope so, but we know about the challenges we have got financially and how difficult the market is at this time, but the club have been working well and these new two additions show we are getting in the kind of players we needed.
“Now it is time to see if they can perform to the level we want them to, but hopefully we can get something else.”
