The experienced EFL striker spent loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Millwall early on in his career.

Former Charlton Athletic and Millwall striker Martyn Waghorn has been made a free agent at the age of 34 having departed Northampton Town this week.

The talisman only signed for the Cobblers on November 1 but has left Sixfields by 'mutual consent' just over a month later. The news was confirmed by the League One outfit on Tuesday.

Waghorn only spent a short spell in the capital but did turn out for the Addicks and the Lions early on in his career. The player's stint at The Valley came on loan from Sunderland in 2008, when he scored one goal in seven outings.

The Black Cats academy graduate would then spend a loan spell at Millwall while playing for Leicester City in 2013. He picked up three goals and two assists for the Lions over a two month period, making 14 appearances.

Waghorn has racked up the most appearances for Derby County, playing 150 times. He also spent two years at Rangers and played 78 times for the Glasgow giants, winning the Scottish Championship in 2016.

The striker was part of the Derby County squad that won promotion to the Championship from League One last season but left at the end of his contract in June before taking on the new venture with Northampton Town. Waghorn played eight times for the club since arriving in November.

In a statement this week, interim Northampton manager Ian Sampson said: "Martyn came in and helped us through the last few weeks. All parties have now agreed to terminate the contract and we thank Martyn for his time with the club and we wish Martyn and his family all the very best for the future.

"He is a first class character and a good man and we have enjoyed having him in the dressing room."

The Addicks sit five places above their opponents in 14th but just three points separate the two sides. Jon Brady resigned as Northampton Town boss earlier this month after three and a half years with the side.

The team sat 21st in the table and news of the manager's departure came following a 2-0 defeat to Stevenage, which was Brady's 200th fixture in charge of the club.
