Championship manager officially sacked after Millwall, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town defeats
The first Championship manager of the season has been sacked just five games into the 2025-26 campaign
The first managerial casualty of the Championship season has come after just five games with Sheffield United confirming the departure of Ruben Selles.

Reports emerged on Sunday morning that the Blades were preparing to sack the former Hull City, Blackburn Rovers and Southampton man after a torrid start to the Championship campaign.
The Blades sit bottom of the second division with zero points from their opening five games. They have scored just once, which came in the opening day 4-1 defeat to Bristol City. Since then they have lost to Swansea City, Millwall, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town without scoring a goal.
They were beaten 5-0 by Ipswich Town on Friday night which has proven to be the final straw for the club’s board - who appointed Selles in the summer after Chris Wilder left the club.
Sheffield United officially confirm Ruben Selles sacking
Following the reports on Sunday morning, Sheffield United officially confirmed Selles’ departure later in the day. They confirmed the frustration of the supporters had played a part in their decision. A club statement said: “Sheffield United Football Club's board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.
“After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Rubén Sellés has been relieved of his duties as manager.
“Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.
“The board of directors wish to thank Mr Sellés for his hard work. A new manager will be named in due course.”
Chris Wilder has been linked with a sensational return to Bramall Lane, just a few months after he left the club following the Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley.
Charlton Athletic first team to face what could be a rejuvenated Sheffield United side
Wilder’s return could come at a bad time for Charlton Athletic, who make the trip to Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon. Wilder has faced Charlton five times in his managerial career, with the last meeting coming way back in 2017 - a game Sheffield United won 2-1.
That was his only win over the Addicks in five games against them. His Blades side drew 1-1 in the 2016-17 season while he lost twice and drew once with Charlton as manager of Oxford United.
QPR play Sheffield United for the first time this season on November 8. Last season, the Blades drew 2-2 with QPR and beat them 2-1 at Loftus Road under Wilder. He has managed nine games against the West London club for the Blades, Watford and Middlesbrough. He has won four, drew two and lost three.
Millwall were handed a good time to play the Blades, given their early season struggles. They don’t play again until the end of January with Wilder facing the Lions 12 times in his career - he has won four games, lost four games and drawn four.
