Alex Neil says he is not particularly advanced with transfer planning after getting off to a disappointing start in his new job. The new Lions boss saw his side lose narrowly at home to Oxford United in his debut, dropping to 13th in the table.
The Lions will be bidding to get in and around the playoff spots under Neil, currently 11 points off sixth place, and even if they do fall short, it would be a huge step forward be in the conversation come May after a difficult season of last.

Hide AdNew signings could be key to that, but Neil doesn’t yet know what he has within his squad, still needing to assess the situation before delving into the market. “You would never come in and start signing people without looking at the guys that are in the building,” Neil told South London News. “My first port of call will be to assess everyone that is here and then if we need to add, between myself and the club, we’ll see what we can do.”
Neil, as you would expect, wants to change things at The Den, possessing a style of his own compared to his predecessor, Neil Harris. “We need to be progressive with our passing – but what we don’t want to do is just kick it back to them,” Neil added. “Punting the ball up the pitch is not going to make us any better. But also, I’m not a believer of playing 100 passes in your own half. I’d like to think I’m a middle grounder.”
Millwall are currently struggling for goals having failed to score more than one goal in a single game since October, while they couldn’t find a way past Oxford, who have one of the worst defences in the Championship. Asked about the issue, Neil added: “Yeah it is, but, that’s the challenge we’ve got. If it was easy everyone would do it.”
