Mikel Arteta explains two key reasons why Arsenal are better than last season

The Gunners are back at the top of the Premier League table after a 3-0 win over Brighton.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained the two reasons why his team are producing better performances than last season.

The Gunners ran Manchester City close in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign but were pipped to the title by Pep Guardiola’s team who finished the season strongly.

However, Arteta’s side have been imperious in 2024 and are currently 10 games unbeaten, as they produced another convincing win over Brighton on Saturday.

Goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard sealed the victory for Arsenal, who are now top of the Premier League - leading Liverpool by one point.

"We are older and you can tell especially on me,” said Arteta after the game when asked why the Gunners look better than last season.

“We went through a lot of moments together and the chemistry you build within the team. We signed some tremendous players - which helps because it is about them.

"And then it is a good moment because the squad is healthy. The momentum and the energy around the place is good. We've been through it already and that helps."

Meanwhile, Arteta has praised Kai Havertz after the German international put in another excellent performance against Brighton.

Havertz scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season on Saturday, while creating four chances, the most of any player on the pitch.

The 24-year-old has added a variety to Arsenal's attack alongside Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, with Arteta admitting that he can play in a number of positions across the attack.

"Havertz was tremendous again today. His overall performance has been superb and now his goal contribution is higher than anyone else in the league in the last few months.

"His work-rate too - he was chasing back 70 metres here. This heart and this determination, that's why everybody loves him.

"I think you have to feel the player. I thought he could play in three positions, in midfield and as a nine.

"If you like to run then you need someone to play those passes - those relationships are now appearing."
