Gabriel Jesus scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Leeds United on Saturday, with his first goal coming from the penalty spot.

The Brazilian forward opted for a stuttered run-up before slotting the ball past the Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Speaking after the game, Jesus revealed that his unique penalty technique was the result of a joke with his teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko.

“Zina [Zinchenko] joked with me yesterday because we were practising [penalties]. I took the penalty yesterday like I always do and he said ‘you’ll never do this in the game’,” Jesus said.

“I showed him some clips of my penalties. I was calm and I remember this,” he added with a smile.

24-year-old Jesus scored his first goal since October 2022 and his return to the side comes as a welcome boost for Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard was full of praise for Jesus after the game, saying: “Delighted for him. We were all clapping for him and today he deserved the chance to start.

“He grabbed the opportunity.”

Arsenal maintained their eight point lead over Manchester City at the top of the league table after victory over Leeds, with Pep Guardiola’s side also securing a 4-1 win over Liverpool earlier in the day.

The Gunners face a trip to Anfield on Sunday before games against West Ham, Southampton and a crucial title clash against City on April 26.
