Former Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen is reportedly ‘expected’ to join Middlesbrough. The Dutchman along with ex-Hull City manager Mike Phelan is poised to move to the Riverside Stadium to form Michael Carrick’s backroom staff.

Boro have been in the hunt for a replacement for Chris Wilder and The Guardian report that Carrick is set to pen a three-year contract with the Championship outfit. He crossed paths with both Meulensteen and Phelan at Manchester United.

Meulensteen’s Fulham days

Fulham turned to experienced coach back in November 2013 and he took the full-time managerial role after Martin Jol was sacked. He latest until February of the next year at Craven Cottage before he was dismissed and replaced by Felix Magath.

The 58-year-old worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford from 2007 to 2013 with Phelan, having previously coached some of the youth teams of the Premier League giants earlier on in his coaching career. Since leaving the North West, he has had spells all over the world at Anzhi Mahachkala, Maccabi Haifa, Kerala Blasters and as the assistant boss of Australia.

A new chapter awaits at Middlesbrough and they currently have Fulham loan man Rodrigo Muniz playing up front for them. He was given the green light to leave temporarily by Marco Silva in the last transfer window and has since made nine appearances, chipping in with two goals.
