Palace beat Millwall 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon while Fulham defeated holders Manchester United on penalties after the game finished 1-1 following 120 minutes of football.

Elsewhere in the fifth round, there was drama at St James’ Park on Sunday as Anthony Gordon and Tariq Lamptey were both sent off as Brighton and Hove Albion beat Newcastle United 2-1 in extra time.

Aston Villa beat Championship side Cardiff City on Friday night while Preston North End beat Burnley and Bournemouth advanced against Wolves on penalties - after Matheus Cunha was sent off in the final minute of extra time. Plymouth Argyle gave a good account of themselves but lost 3-1 at Manchester City. Nottingham Forest host Ipswich Town on Monday night.

Glasner reflects on Palace win

After their win over Millwall, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said: “We had some chances, everything was under control. And then, unnecessarily, we let them back into the game. We had the possession and there was one or two minutes to play, and then we just passed into a very dangerous area, losing the ball. Then, they get one situation and they are back in the game. And in the second-half, we struggled with their long balls a little bit. They are physically strong and they come easily close to our box. They had long throw-ins which we defended well, and then we waited for the decisive moment – and then it was an amazing header from Eddie. The game was won.”

The win was marred by an injury to Jean-Philippe Mateta who required a number of stitches after a kick to the head from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Glasner added: “He’s at hospital now and has a serious ear injury, but fingers are crossed that it's not too serious.

"I think he will definitely miss the Ipswich game [on 8th March], but I still hope that he's available for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the end of March, so four weeks' time. Of course, we all wish him the best.”

Leno on Old Trafford triumph

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno saved two penalties as the visitors won the shootout at Old Trafford. He told the BBC after the game: "Unbelievable. I think we deserved to win after 90 minutes. Of course, penalties, it is sometimes a lottery and luckily we won.

"The goalie coach told me couple of information, but my feeling is more important. I went the wrong way three times, but credit to our penalty takers - it is not easy. Brilliant job from all of us."

He added: “Two-years ago we lost in the quarter final [against Manchester United] and we're in the quarter final again. We want to go to Wembley 100%."

Calvin Bassey put Fulham ahead just before half-time before Bruno Fernandes equalised for the home side after 71 minutes.
