How did England and Spain reach the Euro 2025 final?

England’s title-defending run did not get off to the best start as they were dealt a 2-1 defeat at the hands of France. They bounced back in the group stage with dominant 4-0 and 6-1 displays over the Netherlands and Wales respectively.

The Lionesses’ knockout journey has been tough graft. Their time in Switzerland looked to be ending as they were 2-0 down against Sweden approaching the 80th minute. However, late quick-fire heroics from veteran Lucy Bronze and rapidly rising young star Michelle Agyemang forced extra-time.

England played out a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their place in the semi-finals, where another match was forced into extra-time. Agyemang popped up once again with a lifeline goal for the Lionesses in stoppage time, before Euro 2022 icon Chloe Kelly netted the winner to shatter Italy’s hearts.

Spain topped their group as they went unbeaten against Portugal, Belgium and Italy, scoring an impressive 14 goals across the three fixtures.

The world champions then eliminated hosts Switzerland in the quarter-finals before their own extra-time clash with Germany in the semis. Late heroics from two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí punched La Roja’s ticket to the final.

England will now be looking to avenge their 2023 World Cup heartbreak, when Spain edged them out 1-0 in the final to lift the trophy for the first time.
