Newcastle United look to stronghold Crystal Palace into transfer as Steve Parish could regret £60m decision

Newcastle United saw a £60 million bid for Marc Guehi rejected by Crystal Palace over the summer.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish could live to regret turning down a £60 million offer from Newcastle United to sign centre-back Marc Guehi this summer as the Magpies prepare for a January raid.

The Northern Echo reports that the Tyneside club are set to bid again for the England international come January, but believe they are in an even stronger position than before. That could see offers coming in below that £60 million bid.

The outlet claims that Newcastle United feel Guehi's value 'has diminished over the course of the last three months' due to his contract situation at Selhurst Park. The defender will enter the final 18 months of his current deal in the New Year with talks of an extension not appearing to progress.

That makes the upcoming window one of the last opportunities Crystal Palace have to demand a higher fee before risking losing the player as a free agent in 2026. The Magpies are also aware of the South London club's form this term with Guehi facing some criticism for his performances as Oliver Glasner's men struggle for consistency.

Recruiting a centre-back remains a key priority for Newcastle United come January, even with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles now nearing a long-awaited return from knee injuries. Guehi is believed to still be keen on a move to Tyneside to work under Eddie Howe.

The defender arrived at Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021 with the Eagles forking out £18 million at the time, making Guehi the club's third most expensive signing of all time. The player has gone on to make 125 appearances for Crystal Palace and it is thought that the outfit valued the defender at £65 million during the summer window.

Speaking about the transfer in August, Parish said: "Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money.

"It's not near the point where we have to make a decision. We love having him and would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He's a generational talent."
