Last season the Red and Blues crashed out the first hurdle to Watford but are eyeing another Cup run having reached the semi-final of the FA Cup.

The Cup games always eases the pressure on a manager, and Vieira is keen on taking the opportunities the League Cup and FA Cup offer during the season.

Standing in their way next is Newcastle who had to come from a goal down against Tranmere Rovers at Preston park to eventually win 2-1.

Elliott Nevitt gave Tranmere the lead before captain Jamaal Lascelles equalised for Eddie Howe’s side, Chris Wood then headed home the winner to ensure progression to the third round.

England defender Kieran Trippier who provided the assist for Chris Wood’s goal says they are looking to go on their own Cup run but will have to take things one step at a time after making so much progress in a short period of time.

He told reporters: “It would mean everything [to have a cup run] but we have come so far in a short period of time. We need to be patient, take it a step at a time and keep building as a team.“

Crystal Palace will take on Manchester City this weekend looking to continue their fine form after drawing with Liverpool and beating Aston Villa over the weekend.
