The out-of-favour goalkeeper will leave Selhurst Park in search of greater playing time.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has completed a move to Premier League rivals Wolves as the summer transfer window edges to a close, having handed in a transfer request to the South London club.

The Eagles manager Oliver Glasner confirmed last weekend that Johnstone wanted a new start having officially lost the number one shirt to Dean Henderson this summer. The goalkeeper will now sign as a Wolves player and compete with Jose Sa for the starting berth at Molineux.

The transfer is yet to be confirmed by the two Premier League clubs but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported that the move has been completed on Thursday. Taking to social media platform X, he wrote: "Sam Johnstone signs in today as new Wolves player on £10m deal from Crystal Palace. Medical completed on Wednesday."

The 31-year-old joined the Crystal Palace in 2022 from West Brom on a free transfer. Johnstone was initially second choice to Vicente Guaita but eventually took the starting berth until being outmuscled by Dean Henderson last season.

Speaking at the weekend, Crystal Palace manager Glasner said: "Sam told us he wants to leave. If he finds a club then he can leave."

GiveMeSport had named Southampton and Leicester City as two sides competing with Wolves for the goalkeeper this month but it is the Midlands side that has won the transfer race. Meanwhile, the Saints have turned to Arsenal man Aaron Ramsdale in a late deal this week.

Johnstone, who has four England caps to his name, made a total of 34 appearances for Crystal Palace in his two years with the club. The goalkeeper is a product of the Manchester United youth academy and has previously enjoyed spells at West Brom and Aston Villa. The player's last appearance for Palace came in the 1-1 Premier League draw against Luton Town at Selhurst Park in March.
