Crystal Palace vs Sunderland injury news as 8 players ruled out and 5 doubts

All the latest injury news surrounding Crystal Palace and Sunderland as they prepare to face off in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace are back in action on Saturday in their first game back after the international break. The Eagles had a crazy ending to the summer transfer window, with Marc Guehi dominating the headlines with his failed move to Liverpool.

It will be interesting to see how Palace respond to all that when they face a Black Cats side that has enjoyed a steady start to the season, winning two of their first three games. Here we round up the latest injury news surrounding both sides.

Luke O’Nien - Doubt

O’Nien is said to have a chance of returning for this one, but he will remain a doubt as he works his way to full fitness after a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Aji Alese - Doubt

Alese posted a picture of himself training on the grass this week, hinging at a return, but he may need to build up fitness before returning.

Leo Hjelde - Out

Hjelde is expected to return from his Achilles injury soon, but he will need to build up his fitness before returning to contention.

Dennis Cirkin - Doubt

Cirkin is expected to return from his wrist injury after the international break but he has not been confirmed as back just yet.

Niall Huggins - Fit

Huggins is back from his groin injury, with Le Bris saying before the break: “Yes, he recovered well because he was in good shape this morning and trained.”

Dan Ballard - Out

Ballard picked up an injury recently and he will be out until late September. Le Bris said: “We had a diagnosis yesterday so [he'll probably be out for] three weeks." Ballard has a groin injury and is expected to return close to the end of the month.

Romaine Mundle - Out

Mudnle is out until October time with a hamstring issue.

Chadi Riad - Out

Glasner has confirmed: “We think Chadi will return after his ACL [injury] in October or November. Now it looks like the timeline of Cheicky is more or less the same.” Riad suffered a serious knee injury early in the new year.

Cheick Doucoure - Out

Glasner said around two weeks ago: “We hoped that Cheicky could return for the Austria camp for training. We think Chadi [Riad] will return after his ACL [injury] in October or November. Now it looks like the timeline of Cheicky is more or less the same.”

Eddie Nketiah - Out

Nketiah is going be out until late September or early October. Glasner said recently: “It is no secret Eddie missed more or less the whole pre-season, because on the second day, he had a small [setback], and now he has a more serious injury, and will be out for what looks like eight weeks. Then, without any pre-season, I think it will take him three or four more weeks to be ready.” Nketiah will likely be back in a couple of weeks.

Matheus Franca - Doubt

Matheus Franca was hoping to return for the Aston Villa game but he didn’t make it back in time. He should be okay after the break, but he will remain a doubt until confirmed otherwise.

Adam Wharton - Doubt

Wharton picked up a muscular injury against Villa. Glasner said after the game: “Muscle injuries, so the players are not used to playing this rhythm. Maybe I need to rotate a bit more. We will have the scan tomorrow and get the results. We always want to avoid muscle injuries. But, again, it is what it is.” We don’t yet know how serious the issue is, but Wharton likely faces a fight to return on time.

Ismaila Sarr - Out

Sarr picked up a hamstring injury against Villa and will miss out here.

Caleb Kporha - Out

Glasner has said: “Caleb has problems with his back and is not able to train and has been out the whole pre-season - we don’t know when he will return.” There has been no update on Kporha’s situation since that early August update.
