Crystal Palace player ratings: Costly error from key defender hands Chelsea 2-0 win at Wembley

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount scored in the second half to hand Chelsea a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and ensure the Blues set up another final against Liverpool.

The Eagles boss Patrick Vieira had tweaked his starting system, playing with a back-three formation that had the ever-smooth passer Joachim Andersen in the middle, Cheikhou Kouyaté out on the right and Marc Guehi playing on the left side of defence as they tried to shackle Chelsea.

Joel Ward and the returning Tyrick Mitchell took up the wing-back roles while Eberechi Eze, James McArthur and Jeffrey Schlupp complimented in the three-man midfield.

The two players handed the attacking roles were Wilfried Zaha and Jean-Philippe Mateta, and despite Chelsea’s highly assembled squad it was Palace who had the best chance in the first half and should have taken the lead.

The second half saw Chelsea come out of the blocks quickly and eventually Tyrick Mitchell - who only returned to training on Thursday - lost the ball in a dangerous area, leading to Ruben Loftus-Cheek opening the scoring for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Palace responded by changing their shape and going after the goal, which led to Mason Mount cutting through the Palace defence and planting the ball beyond Jack Butland to essentially kill the game.

Chelsea will now hope to get revenge on Liverpool, who they lost to in the Carabao Cup final a few months back, while Palace will now turn their attention to finishing as high as they can in the league.
