Crystal Palace decide on new Marc Guehi 'asking price' for January amid interest from Liverpool and others

Crystal Palace could demand a sizable fee for Marc Guehi this winter.

Crystal Palace could find themselves with a big decision to make this summer, but they are not going to put themselves in trouble, according to a fresh report. The Eagles botched the final day of the summer transfer window when they failed to get a deal done to sign a new defender.

That meant Marc Guehi was ultimately told to return home from his medical with Liverpool, and the deal was cancelled. Guehi is out of contract at the end of the season and unlikely to sign a new deal, so the London club face the choice of selling in January or losing him for free next summer.

It is also possible that a club outside England could agree a pre-contract deal ahead of the summer any time from January 1, which could also make things difficult. Logic would usually suggest that Palace sell on the cheap in January to make sure they get something for one of their best players.

But according to a fresh report from former scout Mick Brown, Palace will actually put the season hopes first on this occasion, actually raising their asking price to make sure that if they are to lessen their chances in the Premier League and Conference League, they make it worth their while.

“Obviously, a lot of clubs are interested in signing Guehi,” he told Football Insider. “I don’t think it’s impossible that we’ll see him move on in January because yes, Crystal Palace won’t want to lose him, but if somebody comes in with £40-50million it might get it done.

“It’s above the fee Liverpool were willing to pay, but £35million in the summer is different to £35million when you’re half way through the season and relying on your captain. So it’ll take a bit of a bigger offer to get it done, but if somebody told you you could sign England’s first-choice centre-back for £40million in this market, you’d snap their hand off, it’s a bargain.

“So if somebody gets an injury or feels they’re in desperate need of a centre-back, they may well go to Crystal Palace and see if a deal can be done. If not, he’ll be going on a free and he’ll get a fair whack of the money himself with a signing-on bonus and all of that, so it’s a win-win for him.”

Glasner puts rumours to bed

There were reports that Palace boss Oliver Glasner threatened to leave the club if Guehi was sold, but he rejected those claims last week."I think it's the last time I want to talk about it," said a defiant Glasner.

"I never threatened to leave the club. Never. I didn't have to threaten anybody. There were no bad tensions between the chairman and myself. It was really just a discussion about sports, and he decided against the money and for the sporting perspective of Crystal Palace. Big credit to the chairman."
