Crystal Palace tipped to offer £72m Man Utd flop chance at Premier League salvation

Manchester United could look to replace one striker with a Crystal Palace man this summer.

Crystal Palace could offer Manchester United flop Rasmus Hojlund a chance at Premier League salvation this summer with the 22-year-old linked with a move to Selhurst Park.

The Danish international made a £72 million move to Old Trafford from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 but has been far from prolific since making that switch. In 25 Premier League outings this season, the striker has bagged just three goals with questions over whether he is the right man to lead the line for the Red Devils in the future.

The forward still has plenty of years ahead of him but may struggle to find a Premier League suitor given his performances in the division so far. However, Football Transfers claims that Crystal Palace could be offered the chance to take a punt on the player.

Man Utd prepare to sweeten Jean-Phillipe Mateta offer

Manchester United are widely reported to be courting prolific Eagles bagsman Jean-Phillipe Mateta this summer. The physical Frenchman is thought to be viewed as the ideal man to lead Ruben Amorim’s attacking line.

Sky Sports had reported that it would cost Manchester United £40 million to persuade Crystal Palace to sell Mateta but Football Transfers adds that Hojlund may be included in a cash offer to suggest an immediate replacement for Oliver Glasner. The outlet claims that is a solution ‘that suits all parties’.

Former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson had underlined how good a signing Mateta would be Manchester United. Speaking on Deadline Day, he said: “Man United should get Mateta, that’s what they need.

“He’s a strong lad up front, playing at the top of his game, he leads the line, scoring goals now. He runs and works his socks off harder than anyone you know. But they won’t because he plays for Palace. And everyone would go: “what are you buying him for?”

“But he’s 100 times better than anyone Man Utd have in the front line. Not Amad, he’s a young kid – but he’s much better than Hojlund and Zirkzee at the moment. And Man Utd are playing Mainoo up front. If you’re one of those two centre forwards, I would say: I might as well go out on loan and play for Exeter this month.”

Could Crystal Palace salvation await Rasmus Hojluind?

The thought of trading Hojlund for Mateta may certainly seem a downgrade for Crystal Palace supporters. However, Manchester United legend Japp Stam has claimed that it could be Amorim’s style of play not working for the striker.

He said: "I think that it's the style of play that is holding Rasmus Holjund back. We don't know how the manager is trying to use him in matches and I think he doesn't get a lot of chances to touch the ball and get into games.

"It becomes a very difficult situation for a striker because you don't see crosses coming into the box and the emphasis should be on creating chances for him. If you don't get chances you can't prove how good a striker you are."

In other news, the Premier League are set to use an upcoming Crystal Palace fixture to test out a new rule.
