Newcastle United hope to get 'three or four players' back from injury in time to play against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

The Magpies have been beleaguered by injuries this season and those fitness woes have continued as the campaign draws to a close. However, the North East club will have had a 10-day break between their last outing against Tottenham Hotspur and next week's trip to Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace face West Ham this weekend, looking to build on a big three points at Anfield on Sunday, before hosting Newcastle United on Wednesday.

The Magpies welcomed back Tino Livramento for the 4-0 win over Spurs last weekend and Howe hinted at more returns in the pipeline. Speaking before the Tottenham fixture, Howe said: “Other players are sort of in the background and beginning to improve quite quickly so I’m hopeful that in the not too distant future we can get three or four players back.”

According to NewcastleWorld, the two players closest to returning are England internationals Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, which would no doubt make the Magpies' side a more difficult one for Oliver Glasner's men to overcome.

Trippier has missed the last six weeks with a calf issue while Wilson has been out since mid-February having undergone surgery on a pectoral muscle injury. Howe said: “Kieran’s doing well, he’d be one of the players in the background that’s starting to feel really good. He’s still not on the training pitch with us, but it’s positive signs and a positive outlook for him. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

Meanwhile, Howe added that Wilson was 'looking good' and 'doing the hard yards' - the talisman was spotted in training on Wednesday. Wilson would add extra firepower to a side that has relied on the form of Alexander Isak in front of goal.

Wilson has faced Crystal Palace five times as a Newcastle United player, winning two, drawing two and losing just once. The 32-year-old picked up three goals and two assists in those matches.
