Why Mauricio Pochettino was furious at Petrovic and Gilchrist's kind gesture in Chelsea's win over West Ham

Chelsea are beginning to bode well after a rocky start to life under Mauricio Pochettino. They are looking more confident and players are showing incredible growth in the last few weeks. 

Marc Cucurella, a player who has struggled to show the form that made Chelsea go all out to beat Manchester City for his signature is looking like a prime Roberto Carlos now. 

Noni Madueke was unplayable for large parts as Chelsea produced a completely dominant display to thrash West HamUnited 5-0 to go seventh on the league table and close the gap on sixth-placed Newcastle to just two months with three games to end the season. 

There is still a real chance to get Europa League football but even if they do not, there is enough to see that this team is beginning to click into form. So on a very positive afternoon at Stamford Bridge, here are some of the observations from the game.

The individual coaching during the game paid off

One of the things that has become increasingly clear in the last few weeks has been the individual coaching of players during games. Against West Ham, it was common to see both Benoit Badiashile and Thiago Silva being called whenever there was a break in play to give instructions and coach them on a developing pattern. Sometimes they were given information to pass on to other players.

The Chelsea boss paid attention to the position of his players with and without the ball, repositioning them when he felt they were far apart and at risk of conceding a counterattack.

Furious Pochettino tells off Đorđe Petrović

One of the highlights of how high the standards are at Chelsea at the moment was when they took the lead through a brilliant Cole Palmer strike and minutes later, they conceded a chance with Jarrod Bowen hitting the post. The West Ham man came close to instantly equalising and Pochettino furious made eye contact with his goalkeeper before furiously telling him to communicate with his backline. 

It was a moment that could have changed the direction of travel of the game, but the Chelsea boss and his assistant from the touchline made their point to Petrovic who ended up keeping a deserved clean sheet. 

Alfie Gilchrist is loving every moment at the moment 

Not many players get promoted to the first team, sign a new contract, make their debut and score for the childhood club in the same season, but Gilchrist has achieved all that in the last four months.

He’s just living his dreams and he’s doing so and also creating a genuine bond with the Chelsea fans. Before kick-off he had time for the fans who were sat next to the players' bench, shaking hands with a number of them before politely declining a selfie request to focus on the game. 

He’s also generally a nice person when he walks past the mixed zone. Not many players bother but he attempts to respond to journalists and even chats to those he knows very well. For a 21-year-old, he carries himself around quite well. 

Thiago Silva’s emotional goodbye has started

Rarely has Stamford Bridge loved a player like they do to the Brazilian. The game against West Ham was his first since he announced this would be his last season and in large parts, fans made their love for him known.

They sang his name during the game and made sure they kept on with it after the final whistle until he walked away and faded into the tunnel. LondonWorld sources say the plan is to make him the captain for the final game of the season against Bournemouth, but if the game against West Ham is anything to go by, it will be an emotional day for him and his family.
