The Spanish goalkeeper has kept a professional outlook having seen his position taken up by Mendy but Thomas Tuchel insists he has two fantastic goalkeepers and they will make a decision.

He told reporters: “Somebody sent me an interesting quote about Napoleon who asked his generals if they should not only have the best quality but he also needs them to be lucky generals.

“This is what you need also from leaders and from goalkeepers and that they have the kind of momentum that if they make a little mistake it’s not punished.

“At the moment he gets punished a lot for not a lot of what he does wrong.”

On if it was time to give Mendy a rest and turbo charge given Kepa’s potential, the Chelsea boss added: “He’s absolutely ready to play.

“So it’s on us if we give him the chance or not, it’s on us, but he is 100% ready - how he behaves, how he trains is very, very good. There are no doubts in my mind.

“The situation is calm. We have two fantastic goalkeepers, two fantastic guys. We are aware that he [Mendy] is in that kind of situation but first we deal inside and then we tell you.”

Edouard Mendy is playing behind a new defensive set-up after Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger moved on from Spain.

Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella have all come in to try and build the foundation for what is expected to be a riveting season.
