Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku scored four times as Belgium beat Azerbaijan last night in the European Championship qualifiers.

The 30-year-old has now scored 83 goals for his country. He did all the damage in the first half before being rested as 10-man Azerbaijan lost 5-0.

Asked if his early substitution was planned, the on-loan Roma forward says he suspected it was because he'd played alot of games at club level.

He told reporters after the game: "I've played a lot with Roma in the last few weeks, that's why the coach and I decided that I would come out at half-time. Being qualified is very positive, but this must motivate us to continue like this."

After a summer of huge uncertainty, Lukaku has looked back to his best and has six league goals in Serie A. Only Lautaro Martínez and AC Milan's Oliver Giroud have netted more goals than him in Italy's top flight.

Asked about the role he is now playing in teams as he looks to use his experience to guide players at both club and international level, he said: "It's true that I try to do my best to be able to guide the young people in the team. During training and matches, I try to put their trust in them.

"I don't talk much and I let them do with their qualities. But when we play, sometimes I say: 'After you do your dribble, look at me'. This new generation is very talented and I'm sure we can go very far and we will do good things."

LondonWorld understands that Chelsea will be delighted with the form of Lukaku as they look to cash in on him in the summer and his fine goal-scoring form will mean he fetches them at least more than when he's not scoring goals.
