Mauricio Pochettino says 27-year-old Chelsea star will not make the squad for the Newcastle game

Ben Chilwell has already missed 18 games for Chelsea this season and has suffered another setback.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Ben Chilwell will miss Monday night's Premier League game against Newcastle. Midfielder Conor Gallagher and defender Levi Colwill are also doubts for the game.

Since moving from Leicester to Chelsea in 2022 for £45million, the 27-year-old left-back has missed 90 games for the Blues due to fitness and his manager Pochettino admitted it was hard to see progress in his team with players consistently dropping out due to injury.

Pochettino told reporters ahead of the game on Monday night: "Chilly was playing in the last few games, and now arrives Cucurella but Chilly is out. Or Levi [is out] and now Trevoh is available after seven months is available but he cannot fight for Levi because Levi is a few weeks away from the competition.

"There is always something. It is always frustrating because the situation for us to work with the full squad and now compete for the place, that is going to be a point to improve.

"But yes, we need to accept the circumstance. Very bad luck. I don't think it's just from this season, but the season before. We saw the circumstance when the club signed Fofana or Badiashile, different players who were not consistent in training or play.

"We are suffering this type of negativity in terms of injuries but we need to accept that. We cannot give up. We need to keep working and believing and to translate the confidence to the players that need to perform on Monday."

Chelsea are aiming for European football next season to ease its financial burden having invested £1billion in the squad since Clearlake Capital took over in May 2022, however, Newcastle will arrive at Stamford Bridge with their own European ambitions.
