Manchester United are yet to appoint a new manager ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has issued a fresh response to links with Manchester United ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea. United decided to finally pull the trigger on Erik ten Hag after Sunday’s defeat to West Ham United, with the Dutchman leaving the Red Devils in 14th place with just 11 points from nine games despite back-to-back years of big spending.

A number of bosses have already been linked with the Old Trafford job, but Sporting CP boss Amorim appears to be the favourite with the 39-year-old having also been linked with the Liverpool job towards the end of last season. Amorim has been with Sporting since 2020 when he joined from Braga, and he has since won two league titles, two league cups and a domestic super cup.

Amorim is one of the most hotly tipped young managers in Europe. and United are said to be pushing for his signature, but even the Lisbon native himself does not know where his future lies. He responded on Tuesday night when asked about the United job: "Nothing is decided yet. I don't know if it's the farewell game or not.

"There is interest from Manchester United, there is the payment of a contract term and when I have something more solid, I will come here and tell my position, because it will be my choice. While I don't have everything decided, for one side or the other, I can't tell much more".

Amorim had previously said: “I was expecting that question and obviously I am not going to talk about my future,” he said when asked about the United job.

“I am not going to speak about my future because no matter what I say I’d have to always talk about it. Since the first day, I said it was not worthy to ask about it and I am not going to make any comments about my future.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy is currently in temporary charge of United, and he will be in charge this Sunday as they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford unless Amorim or anyone else is appointed in the meantime,
