Liverpool boss Arne Slot makes Chelsea spending claim amid Man City financial charges update
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has been speaking about Manchester City and Premier League spending.
Arne Slot has name dropped Chelsea when asked about the latest update on Manchester City’s battle against financial charges. City face more than 100 charges over financial rule breaches, but they now appear likely to escape any serious punishment.
Despite claims City could be relegated or face some sort of serious consequences, The Athletic now say the Manchester club are confident that they will only face a serious fine in the event they are found guilty of wrongdoing.
That may explain why City are still spending freely, tying Erling Haaland down to a giant 10-year contract, while Abdukodir Khusanov has been snapped up for more than £30million. Managers around the league have been asked about the Haaland contract and what deals like that mean for the Premier League.
And in his response, Liverpool boss Slot name dropped Chelsea, saying: "Not particularly about the investment but we know how good we have to be every single day to compete in this league. It is not only the club you are referring to [City], Chelsea also spend £1.2bn, (Manchester) United spend an incredible amount.
"Every team spends a lot of money over here, that's why it's such an interesting league to be part of. Some seasons this club spends a bit more, other seasons other clubs spend a bit more. That's what makes this league so intense and so difficult to win. But that's also the reason why we want to be here. You want to compete against the best, with the best, and we are very happy with the team we have at the moment and we are still able to compete with all the teams that are spending incredible amounts of money.
Postecoglou on Haaland
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was also asked about the Haaland deal, adding: "Yeah it’s interesting. Obviously the player is really happy and I’m sure the club is really happy.
“He is still a relatively young man and it’s a commitment from both. It’s not unusual in other sports, particularly in American sports. It might be something, I know Chelsea did a couple of longer term ones as well, the way clubs are going in the future depending on how globally the game is moving. I see a lot of benefits for Man City in it and if Erling is committed he is really happy there."
