Levi Colwill reveals ex-Liverpool star’s role in new Chelsea contract after Mauricio Pochettino conversation

Chelsea star Levi Colwill has opened up on some advice he received before penning his new Chelsea contract.

Chelsea star Levi Colwill has revealed how a conversation with a former teammate led to his decision to comit his long-term future to the Blues.

Colwill is an exciting defensive talent who is forming part of Mauricio Pochettino’s back-line this season. The 20-year-old enjoyed a stellar season on loan with Brighton last term, helping them qualify for the Europa League, and he then played a key role in helping England under-21s win the European Championship.

Colwill was linked with a move away from Chelsea amid fears over his game time, but he then penned a long-term deal with the Blues after being told he would be a key part of Pochettino’s plans.

Though, it wasn’t just Pochettino who convinced Colwill to stay, with the defender’s former Brighton teammate and ex-Liverpool star Adam Lallana playing a key role.

“I have had conversations with Adam,” said Colwill. “He told me about how much of a good guy he (Pochettino) was and he thinks he is a really good manager and I took that on board when I was making my decision.”

Speaking about Pochettino, Colwill added: “When I finally met him (Pochettino), I realised everything Adam said was true.

“That’s a big difference, him showing that there are two sides whereas the majority of managers may just look at you like a footballer, which he doesn’t. That helps me play my best football. I know I’m going to improve. I can guarantee that. He’s such a good manager and he will push me, he won’t let me have any off-days, that’s what I need.

“Someone like me, if someone lets me go to sleep, I might just have a good day or a bad day. I need someone there to give me that kick up bum and say ‘keep going’. That’s what he does.”
