Everything you need to know about Chelsea’s pre-season friendly fixture with Wrexham in California.

Chelsea are now closing in on their first Stateside friendly amid their pre-season of the United States. The Blues are currently in California, and before the tour is done, they will travel down to Ohio, Atlanta and then North Carolina.

These pre-season tours are crucial for exposing the club’s brand, and they will likely be a fixture of the summer for many years to come, and especially while the Blues have American owners. Wednesday night’s rivals Wrexham also have American owners, of course, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney famously running the Welsh club.

Wrexham are preparing for their first season back in League One after achieving back-to-back promotions from the National League and then League Two. Many people expect this coming season to be a reality check for the Dragons, with League One traditionally being a big step up from League Two, but Wrexham have had a knack of proving people wrong over recent years.

It remains to be seen just how strong a team Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will put out against the League One side, but fans will still want to tune into the clash. With that in mind, we have rounded up all you need to know about the fixture.

Maresca has said of his side’s pre-season trip to the States: “It is always important to have a connection with the fans. The fans in the US, the fans in England, the fans anywhere.” He added: “We have not had the chance to visit the city because we arrived very late [last night] and we had a session this afternoon. [But] it is always nice to share time with our fans abroad, not only in England. As a player or a manager, I have been here many times and it is always a pleasure.”

What has Phil Parkinson said?

Parkinson has said of Wrexham’s US tour: “The key factors are that we’re back two weeks before the season starts. It enables us to get that jet lag out of the lads’ legs. And obviously when we’re over there the travelling is restricted because we’re on the West coast for the whole trip.”
