Julian Nagelsmann was the first choice for Chelsea board and only turned to former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino after the German turned down their approach due to the chaos at the club according to his agent.

Pochettino is close to being appointed as the new Chelsea boss after verbally agreeing to lead the Blues next season. Chelsea are currently outside the top 10 in the Premier League table, they also crashed out of the Champions League and look like a group of strangers. The Blues have just one win in their last eight games undercaretaker boss Frank Lampard.

Volker Struth is quoted by Bild in Germany: “I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call [after Nagelsmann’s Bayern exit]. There were some phone conversations.

“It was the right decision not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment.

“And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues.
