Chelsea have confirmed the sacking of manager Graham Potter just seven months after he took over from Champions League winning manager Thomas Tuchel last September.

The 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa was the final nail in the coffin for Potter who leaves Chelsea 11th on the league table despite the club spending £600 million in the last two transfer windows.

Chelsea confirmed Potter had been sacked in a short statement on Sunday evening: “Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club. Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition.”

The Blues are 12 points off top four and will host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening with Bruno Saltor taking charge of the game and possibly the remaining 10 league matches. He is also likely to take charge of the Champions League quarter final tie against Real Madrid.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek who started Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat earlier on revealed Potter was already looking forward to the Liverpool game and urged the players to switch their focus to it minutes after the Villa defeat.

He told the club’s website: “The gaffer in the dressing room straight away said that we have a lot of games this month, important ones that we need to be ready for and dwelling on this will certainly not help, especially with Liverpool coming up.”

Graham Potter’s sacking means Chelsea will be looking for their third straight manager this season and now have a mountain to climb if they are to make the Champions League next season.
