Glenn Hoddle has sent a clear message to a struggling Chelsea player.

The Blues have spent significantly over the last year or so, and one of their most expensive signings was Mykhaylo Mudryk. The Ukrainian winger arrived on a big-money deal from Shakhtar Donetsk, with Chelsea moving late to outbid Arsenal. But while Mudryk showed huge promise for Shakhtar, he is yet to reach his best level for Chelsea.

While the 22-year-old often looks sharp on the ball, he has not been providing goals and assists like he managed at his previous club.

Mudryk has started on the bench for each of Chelsea’s first two Premier League games this season, and it’s clear he is going to need to do more to impress new boss Mauricio Pochettino. That’s something former Chelsea player and boss Hoddle has spoken about during an appearance on the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

He said: “Mudryk hasn’t showed anything for Chelsea like he did [before] they bought him. There’s a player in there waiting to come out.”

Chelsea will need to see more from their big-money investment, but Pochettino will be well aware that the winger likely needs confidence to succeed, and that is only going to come with game time. In the meantime, Arsenal will be wondering whether they got away with one during the winger’s struggles for form.

Speaking about Mudryk, Pochettino recently said: “He’s a young player and a player that has a lot of talent.

“I think he needs to build his continuity and trust [with his team-mates], work hard in the training sessions during the week and continue to show he is ready to perform. We need to also build that trust with him and he needs to build it with us as part of the team, as is the same with many of our younger players.

“It will take a little time but there is no doubting he has enormous talent and quality and it’s only a matter of time before he settles into the team on a regular basis.”
