Glenn Hoddle issues Chelsea VAR verdict and hails 'brilliant' attacker for what he did in Aston Villa draw

Chelsea fought back from two goals to claim a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa

Former Chelsea man Glenn Hoddle believes the Blues would have been deserved winners at Aston Villa had Axel Disasi's injury time winner been allowed to stand. Mauricio Pochettino's side claimed a point in the game at Villa Park as they fought their way back from two goals down to draw 2-2 thanks to second half efforts from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher.

The west Londoners thought they had managed to nick all three points when Disasi nodded home in the fifth minute of injury time, too. However, the goal was ruled out by VAR for a foul committed by Benoit Badiashile in the build-up to the effort, with the defender appearing to nudge Diego Carlos in the back before firing the ball back across goal for Disasi to head home.

Hoddle has no issues with the decision to rule out the goal, insisting the officials made the correct decision, but the pundit does believe Chelsea can count themselves unfortunate not to leave the West Midlands with all three points.

"I thought it was a foul," Hoddle said during TNT Sports coverage of the Premier League fixture. "We'd come down from upstairs and we were near the corner flag there.

"As soon as it happened I saw him shove, I saw the foul and it takes the defender off the line of the ball, I think he would have headed it. That's the reason why Badiashile fouls him, he knows that. He gives him a nudge and that is a foul anywhere on the football pitch. Chelsea deserved to win today, they were the better team particularly in the second half."

Of Chelsea's performers at Villa Park, Hoddle was particularly impressed with Madueke, who bagged the first goal of the night by curling Gallagher's effort beyond Robin Olsen and into the bottom corner.

"I thought he was brilliant," Hoddle added. "He held the width a little bit more than he did in the first half.

"What a finish that is, it's what Palmer has been doing all season, just stroking the ball into the corner of the net. He's a young man, 21 years of age, that's a beautiful finish.

"Now, if I'm the manager I'm saying to him, 'you've shown us what you can do, you can do that time and time again'. Second half, he had the full-back on toast."
