Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu is expected to return to Cobham today and coincidentally becomes the longest-serving member of the club on the books following the exit of Ghana defender Baba Rahman to PAOK.

Ampadu who made his Chelsea debut in 2017 will benefit from longevity at the club having seen the exit of captain César Azpilicueta and Rahman in the same window.

Azpilicueta who left Chelsea as the only player to have won it all at the club joined the Blues in 2012 just when they had won the Champions League for the first time, he played in numerous positions including centre half, wing-back, left back and right and won the Club World Cup, two Premier League titles one under Jose Mourinho and the other under Antonio Conte and the Champions League with Thomas Tuchel.

He left the club as the longest-serving member of the group before briefly handing it to Rahman who joined Chelsea from Augsburg in 2015 and played 23 times for the first team, all in the first year.

Loan spells at Schalke, Mallorca, Reading, PAOK and Reims all followed before his exit was confirmed yesterday by the club. That leaves Ethan Ampadu as the leader of the award that is given to the longest-serving member of the group since their debut.

The Wales international is expected at Cobham to begin pre-season after spending last season on loan at Spezia, his path to Pochettino’s team is unclear but he is expected to be part of the team and will travel to the United States for the pre-season games.
