Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea have now 'completed agreement' with 'very important' player

Chelsea have struck a key agreement as they look to lock down their best players.

Chelsea are said to have wrapped up a new contract agreement with one of their most important players. The Blues have had an interesting summer transfer window so far, moving away from their gung-ho spending model after receiving a hefty fine from UEFA.

UEFA promised an even bigger fine if Chelsea didn’t start managing their spending more responsibly, and it seems the Blues have heeded that warning. There were three big signings early in the window, but since then, the West London club have been prioritising sales, and they didn’t sign Jorrel Hato until they sold Joao Felix.

More signings are now expected, but again, Chelsea will not press ahead with those deals until they sell more players. But it’s not all about incomings and outgoings, with Chelsea now taking care of some important contract business.

Marc Cucurella has been rewarded with a new contract having been a vital part of Enzo Maresca’s plans. Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “EXCL: Chelsea have now completed the agreement with Marc Cucurella over new deal. Seen as key player on the pitch, leader off the pitch and really important for present/future. New contract is signed and sealed for Cucurella at #CFC.”

Cucurella didn’t have it easy early in his time at Stamford Bridge, and there was a time when it looked as though he was not consistent enough to cut it. But for a good 18 months or more, he has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers, and during that time, he has also become an unquestionable starter for Spain, playing a vital role in their Euro 2024 success last year.

The Spaniard wasn’t out of contract until 2028, but it seems he will get an extra year or two while also getting a pay rise to make sure he is locked down at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca said of Cucurella last season: “Cucu has a background with the Barcelona academy, La Masia, He grew up in a club where the philosophy or the idea that I like is similar. So the reason why Cucu is doing so good with us is also because we know him, what he can do and the way we like to play is exactly the way that is good for him. So it’s in both ways.”

He added in a separate address: “Marc [Cucurella] is very important. Marc has something that you sometimes struggle to find in players. He is good and he is making the players around him good because he is a guy who is always talking, always demanding. If you can have five, six or seven players like Marc in your team, who are always talking about improving the rest, it’s very important. So I’m very happy with Marc."

There was some talk of interest from Saudi Arabia in Cucurella this summer, but there was never an indication that Chelsea would consider a sale, and this move makes their stance on the defender clear.
