European club 'interested' in Chelsea loan deal amid Enzo Maresca's 'expect better' admission

One Chelsea star is attracting interest from a European giant ahead of the January transfer window.

Chelsea’s business over recent years has brought mixed results, with some signings making a big impression while others simply not cutting it, leading to swift exits. One player who is currently struggling to cut it is winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, who arrived at the club on a deal worth up to £89million.

The winger has made 48 league appearances, scoring five times, generally struggling to be impactful on a regular basis despite looking unstoppable for Shakhtar Donetsk both in league and Champions League competition. There has been talk of Chelsea giving up on the Ukrainian, but that does not look to be the case.

Fabrizio Romano has reported: “There’s absolutely zero truth in the story that Mykhailo Mudryk wants to leave Chelsea. Mudryk has not made any decision to leave, and there are no talks taking place with any club.

“Full focus remains on Chelsea and on doing his best under Maresca, while Chelsea also hope to see him at his best soon. So there’s really nothing in this ‘story’ – I don’t even know where this is coming from to be fair.”

But if Mudryk does not improve over the coming months and remains stranded on the bench, Chelsea may have to consider sending him out on loan to save on wages and to give the winger a fresh start and the opportunity to regain some confidence.

According to Jeunes Footeux, Marseille are dreaming of a loan deal for the winger in the January transfer window, with Mudryk’s former boss Roberto De Zerbi reportedly keen on a deal. For Chelsea, much will depend on the Ukrainian’s form over the coming months, but the arrival of Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho over the summer means Maresca does have depth out wide.

Maresca’s complaints

The Chelsea boss has been pretty open in his criticism of Mudryk, warning him that he must be consistent if he wants regular football. He said: “I don’t think it’s a lack of confidence. Misha is Misha, you have to accept the way he is. Hopefully, he can get minutes and do better.”

Maresca previously said: "In some moments we can manage some situations better. He was working hard off the ball but on the ball, I expect a bit more quality from Misha. He had some good moments today but the reason why was to change it and give Pedro some minutes."
