Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has slammed his old club for the manner in which they celebrated their FIFA Club World Cup success on Saturday.

The European champions saw off Brazilian side Palmeiras to seal the trophy after a Romelu Lukaku header and a Kai Havertz penalty handed the Blues a 2-1 victory in extra time.

Thomas Tuchel’s men were suitably jubilant after the final whistle, celebrating excitedly on the pitch and back in their dressing room.

But Burley has voiced his displeasure at the scenes, and has called for the Blues to focus more readily on trying to bridge the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Manchester City.

What did Burley say about Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Club triumph?

The Scot wasted little time in expressing his disdain for the competition, and for Chelsea’s delight at lifting the trophy.

Speaking on ESPN, he said: “I get it they’re off playing in it but I don’t watch this competition, I think it’s a nonsense.

“They’re off salivating about winning it. You’ve got Romelu Lukaku scoring a good header, you’ve got Kai Havertz scoring a penalty. Do it when it matters!

“Alright, Havertz scored in a Champions League Final but as they’re off celebrating like they’ve won the World Cup, City have racked up a 16-point lead on Chelsea where it really matters – in the Premier League – the big competition for them.

“And they’re off celebrating out there like they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. Meanwhile they’re getting their backside booted all over the place by City. It’s embarrassing.

“The Champions League Final is fine, winning the Premier League is fine but the Club World Cup is nonsense. It’s a showpiece event, it’s a plastic trophy.

“I don’t buy a £100m striker to win the b***** Club World Cup. I buy them to challenge City and Liverpool in the Premier League, [but] they haven’t done it.

“They’re 16 points behind, they haven’t got a chance of winning it this year and the way they’re playing they don’t have a chance next year.

“So spare me this plastic fans, plastic cup, Club World Cup nonsense. Your bread and butter is the Premier League and City are whipping your backsides.”

Burley was then accused of being bitter after leaving the club in 1997, and offered up a blunt retort in response.

He replied: “Let me tell you something. Half of these Chelsea fans weren’t even Chelsea fans in 1997. They’ve jumped on the Roman Abramovich bandwagon. They won’t even be able to name players from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Trust me.”
