Chelsea transfer rumours: Three players Enzo Maresca could sign in January and two he probably won’t

Chelsea have a key opportunity to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window

Chelsea enjoyed their best result of the season so far as they ended a three-game winless streak in the Premier League to beat defending champions Liverpool 2-1 in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful.

It’s a result which heavily boosts confidence in the west of the capital, and one which could also prove a catalyst for a successful season after what has so far been a stop-start campaign from a Chelsea perspective. The Blues have made excellent progress under Enzo Maresca, and it’s clear the signings of Joao Pedro and Estevao among others have had a positive impact on the team.

But many still doubt if Chelsea have the credentials to end their eight-year wait for a league title. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up all of the main transfer stories surrounding the West London side as they continue to push for their goal of a league title and assess which of the rumoured names they are likely to target as well as those that are unlikely to move to Stamford Bridge this winter at least.

Three Chelsea-linked targets that make perfect sense at this stage

Kenan Yildiz: Chelsea are certainly not short of attacking options on paper after adding both Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens among others to their attacking options but that’s done nothing to silence numerous reports linking them with a move for Kenan Yildiz. According to TuttoJuve, The Juventus man was the subject of a failed bid in the region of £58m in the summer but an improved offer could still be submitted in the winter.

Jorthy Mokio: Chelsea are one of a number of top Premier League clubs to be linked with Ajax wonderkid Jorthy Mokio. The 17-year-old enjoyed a fine season in the Dutch capital last term and is already seen as one of the first names on the teamsheet. He can play as a defensive midfielder but also as a centre-back, which is something Chelsea could take advantage of after Levi Colwill’s ACL injury.

Dusan Vlahovic: Former Arsenal transfer target Dusan Vlahovic is reportedly pushing for a move to the Premier League as he enters the final few months of his Juventus contract. The 25-year-old has scored 62 times in 153 matches for the Old Lady and could further enhance Chelsea’s goal threat. The player is crucially free to discuss personal terms with clubs outside of Italy by January.

Two players Chelsea are unlikely to sign in January

Marc Guehi: On paper it would make a great deal of sense for Chelsea to try and re-sign academy graduate Marc Guehi. He’s one of the best players in his position in the Premier League and has less than 12 months remaining on his contract amid interest from Liverpool. However, numerous outlets including the Daily Express have claimed any hope of a deal for Chelsea is off the table at this point.

Antoine Semenyo: Bournemouth superstar Antoine Semenyo has almost every top club in the country queuing up for him after a sublime start to the new season. Chelsea are believed to be one of them and they are thought to be willing to pay £78m. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility but given the fact the player signed a contract extension in the summer it seems unlikely at this moment in time.
