Mauricio Pochettino to face former club as the battle for European spots continues

Chelsea will be hosting Tottenham Hotspur this evening with both teams eyeing up places in UEFA’s European competitions for next season. Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs head to Stamford Bridge off the back of a dramatic 3-2 north London derby defeat, in which they came from 3-0 down to almost steal two points off their fiercest rivals Arsenal.

The Blues enjoyed their own fightback on Saturday night as they fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw against Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa - it could have been a famous 3-2 win for the Blues, had Axel Disasi’s stoppage time goal not been disallowed following a lengthy VAR review,

It’s set to be another entertaining clash in the capital tonight as Mauricio Pochettino comes up against his former side with both clubs’s European futures on the line, and neither side exactly known for their diligent defending.

Doubts

  • Raheem Sterling - Lower back complaint and could feature on Thursday but the weekend is more likely.
  • Christopher Nkunku - Barely featured this season and could be in contention for Thursday.
  • Levi Colwill - Late fitness test
  • Carney Chukwuemeka - Pochettino said last week that ‘Carney felt something in his knee related to his problem before. We hope it’s not a big issue and he can be back as soon as possible.’
  • Ben Chilwell - Under assessment to determine availability for tonight
  • Lesley Ugochukwu - Closing in on first team action and will be back for West Ham even if not tonight.

Out

Chelsea:

  • Wesley Fofana - Ongoing knee injury and not expected to return this season.
  • Romeo Lavia - Ruled out for remainder of season
  • Enzo Fernandez - Recently underwent successful groin surgery and will therefore be out until pre-season.
  • Reece James - Pochettino said last week that the club captain was ‘close’ but he was ‘not yet available.
  • Malo Gusto - No concrete return date after knee ligament issue but Pochettino said: “We hope it’s not a big issue.”
  • Thiago Silva -Silva has suffered a groin issue, similar to one sustained earlier in the season, and could be out for three weeks
  • Robert Sanchez - Back in partial team training

Spurs:

  • Destiny Udogie - A thigh injury and subsequent surgery will keep him out until pre-season
  • Fraser Forster - The goalkeeper fractured his foot and will be out until the end of the season.
  • Ryan Sessegnon - Sessegnon underwent surgery on his right hamstring and is likely to be out until the end of the campaign
  • Timo Werner - Werner has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the rest of the season.
  • Manor Solomon - A further procedure on his knee will keep Solomon out until June.
  • Ben Davies - Davies picked up a calf issue last weekend which will likely ruled him out of the rest of the games
