Chelsea are working round the clock to reach an agreement with Roma for the loan exit of striker Romelu Lukaku this weekend.

The 30-year-old striker is the club’s highest earner but has made it clear he wants out with the club also happy to use his wages to bring in other players that will complement the squad.

Lukaku spent last year on loan at Inter Milan where he helped them to the Champions League final and was expected to return there but a late collapse in the deal opened the door for Juventus who were interested before just being unable to afford him.

AS Roma have now stepped in and are willing to pay at least half his wages which will allow Chelsea the chance to save some money that will allow them to satisfy manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Chelsea boss admitted he wanted a goalkeeper and possibly another striker before the transfer window shuts. He said last week: ‘We need at least one goalkeeper.

“We have good young goalkeepers, but they need time. And then we need one offensive player with the right profile.”

Chelsea have since confirmed the signing of Djordje Petrovic from MLS side New England Revolution to give competition to Robert Sanachez who has suddenly become the number one.

The exit of Lukaku will now afford the manager and the Chelsea board one more major signing as they look to close the squad and give the manager all the tools he needs to bring the club back to where they belongs.
