Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle United: six score 6/10 but battling Gallagher stands out in win

Mykhailo Mudryk scored late to force penalties and help Chelsea to a 4-2 win over Newcastle in the League Cup.

Mykhailo Mudryk scored deep into extra time to force penalties against Newcastle after Eddie Howe's side had taken the lead in the first half. Chelsea held their nerves to see off the visitors and progress to the last four.

Callum Wilson opened the scoring after a trio of mistakes. First, left-back Levi Colwill hit a heavy pass which Moises Caicedo failed to control before Benoit Badiashile who should have just cleared it made a mess, allowing the English striker the simplist of finishes to give his side the lead.

This was a game Chelsea could ill afford mistakes and misfortune, but both happened to them befoe the 30th minute mark with midfielder Enzo Fernandez forced off due to an injury. Eddie Howe's team came into the game with half their squad on crutches, but here they were managing the game well and picking their moments to attack.

Chelsea dominanted the ball and forced Newcastle back in search of an equaliser and the agitated Mauricio Pochettino had no option but to give French forward Christopher Nkunku his debut as they threw the kitchen sink at the Magpies to try and rescure their League Cup campaign.

The arrival of the former RB Leipzig forward generated energy across the pitch and in the stands, you could feel the hope from the home fans with every touch he made. But it was another big money signing Mudryk who would score late on to force penalties.
