Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has hinted forward Christopher Nkunku could be ready after the international break.

The French forward lighted up Chelsea pre-season with goals and style but an injury just before they left the United States meant he's been outside watching on as the Blues struggle through a take-off under Mauricio Pochettino.

But the Chelsea manager confirmed there could be light at the end of the tunnel finally with the 25-year-old nearing a return even though it was hard to tell exactly when.

He told reporters about a chat he had with him a few days ago where the striker was optimistic of a return against Newcastle before coiling in late as reality dawned on him.

Pochettino told reporters: "We had some conversation and he said to me I want to be ready for after the international break, Newcastle. I asked him yesterday and he said hmmm, and I said you are a liar." "It is close and he is really well. We are happy with him."

The Chelsea boss also said Romeo Lavia who is also yet to kick a ball after turning down Liverpool and signing a £60million deal with the Blues.

Lavia arrived at the club with an injury and having missed pre-season, he also picked up another knock in training and has been battling to return.

Pochettino says he's close and could join his teammates next week. "Romeo Lavia is also close. They trained today on the pitch. Hopefully with the team next week."

Chelsea have lost their first games against Manchester City, but they have never lost five times on the spin to any side in the league.
