Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admitted he would have given Josh Acheampong some minutes in the game against Panathinaikos as his contract issues continue. Chelsea have decided not to play him until he signs a new contract.
The player wants to see a clear development plan before committing his future to the club. However, Chelsea is also keen on protecting their assets, taking the position that if he doesn’t sign, the minutes he would have gotten should go to someone who is committed to a long-term future at the club.

Hide AdThis standoff has meant Acheampong hasn’t played for the club in the last month, and manager Maresca has acknowledged that while he likes the player, there’s little he can do about the situation right now.
He told reporters in Athens ahead of the game against Panathinaikos: "No. To be honest, I feel a bit of shame for Josh because I think these kinds of games could have been an opportunity for him. I had a chat with him personally about three weeks ago regarding his situation, and it was a very good, positive conversation, but since then, I haven't spoken to him again. As I said, it's a shame.
“I think Josh has the potential to become a top player. He is still 18, very young, and many things can change for him. He could potentially be very important for Chelsea. It's crucial for the club that our intention is not to lose him. The first priority is to find a solution for his future. At this stage, the most important thing for him is to get minutes, enjoy playing, and develop. I don’t know if the people involved in resolving this issue are truly helping him or not. I really like Josh, and I would love to have him here with us, but it is not possible right now."
Chelsea has secured long-term contracts for players like Reece James and Malo Gusto, which means Acheampong needs to be convinced that he has a future at the club before signing a new deal. However, at 18, he is eager to play regular games.
